Boatyard Bikes

Thursdays - 10.00am to 12.30pm and 1.00 to 4.00pm (same session repeated), Co Create

Join us for our weekly drop in and strip down and rebuild old motorbikes. Birthed out of a desire a space where Men can chat and build community around a communal project. No experience needed, just a willingness to muck in and meet new folks. We mainly work on Honda CG 125 as they are simple, light and parts are widely available.

We’ll be running two sessions a week on Thursdays. No need to book just come along to whichever time is best for you.

Chop & Chat

Every Wednesday - 1.00 to 3.00pm, meet outside Rockfish Seafood Restaurant on the Quay

You are invited to our workshop on Wednesday afternoons for Chop & Chat with Nathan.

Chop & Chat is weekly drop-in session at our workshop, where men are invited to come and chop, dry and package wood for our Kind Kindling project, whilst also providing a safe and welcoming space for honest conversation and chats about life, mental health, recovery, family & everything in between. Our hope is that Chop & Chat will help reduce stigma around men’s mental health, and will help provide a non-judgemental space where men can talk, encourage and support one another over a cuppa, whilst they chop wood together.

Our poetry and spoken word course is a creative writing drop in group that runs every Monday at St Stephen’s Church. Whether you enjoy writing prose or poetry, each session is designed to be stand alone in its content so people can turn up and get involved on any given week! I believe that we all have a story we bring, experiences to muse on and words that we can share. This group exists to build community, grow in creativity and inspire us to live more wholehearted lives.

Different Perspectives on Mental Health

Every Thursday, 19th September to 31st October 2024 - 2 to 4pm, CoLab

During this 6 week course, we will explore the meaning of mental distress from four very different viewpoints; the biological (including the medical model), psychological approaches, the societal perspective and a spiritual one. Each has something to offer, none has the whole story.

This is an introductory level course; no previous knowledge is assumed. It is suitable for those on a recovery journey, for those with a personal or professional interest in mental health, and those seeking to use their own lived experience to help others.

Loose and Lively Sketching

A workshop for beginners. By studying natural objects, come and learn some new skills and gain confidence in your drawing. Using pencils, graphite, pen, ink and watercolour, we will practice drawing natural objects such as leaves, nuts, lichen, buds and birds etc. These natural objects will be used for inspiration and study throughout the morning. The aim is to loosen up your drawing and painting. 

Pencils, graphite sticks, pen, ink and watercolour will be used. Exercises in mark making will be practiced to build up confidence in drawing. Stippling, hatching and light and heavy pressure will be  practiced. Short exercises will help to discover how to really ‘see’ the subject. 

Easy Care and Share Massage

Calligraphy for Christmas – With a touch of gold
Monday 2nd December 2024 - 10.00am to 1.00pm, CoLab

Come and learn how to do Italic writing for Christmas cards, tags , poems or just for pleasure. Examples of Christmas calligraphy will be shown to the students. Simplified strokes will be practiced to establish the basic letterforms. Practicing letters in groups; zig zags, loops ,arches. Attention will be paid to students sitting position, pen angle etc. Roman capitals will be explained to go with the lower case letters used. Demonstrations will be given to the group as a whole throughout and to individual students.

 

Introduction to Forest Bathing

In Japan forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku) has been practised and studied for decades. Evidence shows that time spent forest bathing is good for your overall wellbeing and reduces stress. Forest bathing immerses and focuses your senses - allowing the focus on your senses to bring you into the current moment and engage with the healing power of nature. The experience encourages a feeling of reciprocity when you feel part of being connected with other living things.

Drawing and Painting Medieval Beasts

A workshop for beginners to intermediate levels. Dragons, snakes, monkeys and fabulous birds climbed and flew throughout the pages of medieval manuscripts.

Come and draw or paint some medieval beasts, with tuition throughout . These can be traced or students can draw their own. Add some gold and make your own card or bookmark to take home

EXETER COLLEGE - A Cup for a Cuppa – Pottery Workshop

Wednesday 23rd October 2024 - 10.00am to 12.30pm, CoLab

Join artist potter Stephen Pettet-Smith on this mindful workshop to craft a clay cup. Starting with an ancient pottery technique to make a simple ‘pinch pot’, you’ll work imaginatively to create your own unique cup, complete with a handle. Using terracotta clay and colourful liquid clay called slip, your work will be fired and glazed as earthenware.

Please bring an apron, or wear clothes that you don't mind getting a bit mucky! Once your work is glazed and fired, we will meet again to admire our finished cups and drink that promised cuppa!

EXETER COLLEGE - The Art of Noticing and Drawing Pets

This friendly and gentle workshop is for people who care for or visit a pet.  Join us for two hours of drawing and painting pets and sharing stories of how our furry friends can bring companionship, joy and happiness to our lives. It's not about who can draw the best pets, it's about slowing down to draw together, and discussing how pets can help us live mentally healthier lives. Please leave your pets at home, but we do ask you to bring along a picture of your pet; or a pet you visit; or have seen in a book, TV programme or film. We will work very simply with drawing and painting, so no experience needed for this lovely workshop.

FABLAB - 3D Digital Design – Create a 3D Standing Name Design

In this session, you will learn some 3D design skills using a free website you can then use at home. You’ll look at how 3D printing works and then see some name ideas. Then, you’ll get to create your own 3D standing name which the FabLab will 3D print for you to keep!

FABLAB - 2D Laser-cutting Vector Based-Design – Create your own Laser-cut Lidded Box

In this workshop, you will learn how to create your own vector based design using free software you can then use at home.  You will create designs to be engraved onto your own wooden laser-cut box.  The FabLab will then laser-cut and engrave it for you to keep following the workshop. 

FABLAB - Design your own Tote-Bag

Friday 10th January 2025 - 10.00am to 12.00pm, FabFab Exeter Library

In this workshop, you will learn to use a graphics website where you can combine shapes, images and text to create your own Tote Bag Design. 
The FabLab will then print it using dye-sublimation and a heat press for you to take home. 

 

FABLAB - Design your own Laser-cut Keyring

Friday 10th January 2025 - 2.00 to 4.00pm, FabFab Exeter Library

This workshop will teach you how to use a vector based piece of software to create your own keyring design. 

This will be then cut and engraved in acrylic for you to take home to keep.

POSITIVE LIGHTS - Intro to the Photographic Darkroom

Thursday 21st November 2024 - 10am to 4pm, Positive Lights

In this workshop participants will learn the basics of darkroom printing and will produce a range of beautiful analogue prints. Working with your own negatives on your own enlarger in our new darkroom you will create a contact sheet before choosing a number of images to make prints from using the enlargers.

The workshop is designed for people who are just getting into analogue photography, or those wishing to brush up on previous skills, although no previous darkroom experience is necessary.

You must bring your own processed 35mm black and white film.

Textile Workshop at Exeter Cathedral

Friday 25th October 2024 - 10.00am to 12.00pm, Exeter Cathedral

Come along to this fabric workshop with multi-media artist Davina Kirkpatrick, where we’ll be creating pieces to be included in a textile work to be hung in the new Exeter Cathedral Treasures Gallery. Davina’s art is concerned with ritual and story, refuge and sanctuary, and you can find out more here: www.davinak.co.uk.

Everything is provided but if you would like to bring black and white photocopies of images that are important to you, you can include them in your work. The themes of the art piece are birth (new beginnings/growth) marriage (union/love) and death (grief/loss). We will use heat transfer print processes on fabric to explore these themes. Once printed you can add stitching and other elements to your piece. Everyone will have work to take away as well as leaving a small piece with the artist that will be added into the final commission.

Extra Time Hub – Social Cafe, St James Park, Grecian Centre

Every Tuesday - 10.30am to 12.00pm

Hundreds of people have joined the Extra Time hubs which are run at 11 EFL clubs. The Hubs allow people to decide which activities they want to do and not be prescribed for them. Activities vary from quizzes to arts, music and crafts and even bungee jumping! Although we are yet to see bungee jumping at St James Park! Pop in for a hot drink and a biscuit.

The sessions are a perfect way to socialise, participate in group activity and achieve higher mobility. The sessions are FREE to attend and are welcoming to all newcomers.

Opportunity Club

Every Tuesday - 12.00 to 1.00pm, Wonford Sports Centre

Opportunity Club is a unique project in Exeter which uses football and activity to engage people who may be struggling with mental health issues, homeless or vulnerable.

The sessions are run in partnership with homeless and other support organisations, including the Amber Foundation, RISE, Julian House, CoLab and the YMCA. Previous participants have gone on to become settled and find employment thanks to the constructive environment of the Opportunity Club.

Walking Football - Wonford

Walking Football is ideal for those who would like a gentle re-introduction to physical activity or who want to improve their fitness.The sessions are split into ten-minute games so participants can do as much, or as little, as they feel appropriate.

Our participants are made to feel welcome and the groups have developed long-lasting friendships. You can be as competitive as you like, with some players going on to represent Exeter City in international tournaments.

FREE* 6-week course for adults aged 19+. Join us for this relaxing, mindful course to craft your very own set of fridge magnets. You will create images of your favourite places; places you would love to visit or places you can imagine or invent. Using terracotta clay and colourful slips ( coloured liquid clay) your work will be fired and glazed as earthenware and a magnet attached to the back.

Ideal for beginners or returners - no experience needed. All materials provided. Please bring an apron or wear clothes that you don't mind getting a little grubby!

Art Time! Colour, Collage and Mood

This relaxed and friendly course is a chance to be playful and experimental, to take some time out and try your hand at creative activities using colour as a starting point. Each week we'll try a different colour-based activity with the opportunity to follow set tasks as well as exploring your own ideas.

Does red make you feel energetic or agitated? Blue calm or sad? We all have ways we respond to colour - things we will or won't wear, or how we like a room to look and feel. We will explore colour through a range of activities including collage and collection; working with words; and painting and picture making.

Art Time! Look-See-Draw

Lots of people want or love to draw but sometimes don't have the confidence or skills. It could be that you already draw and maybe don't take the time or space for it. This course is for you. Using a range of materials, playful approaches, experimentation and structured tasks you will develop ways of looking, seeing and drawing.

The course takes place in a light-filled art room and you will be in a small group working with a friendly and supportive tutor. All welcome, from complete beginners onwards, no experience necessary. Take time out to do some art and explore, learn or improve your skills.

Writing Flash Fiction: Creative Writing Course

Flash Fiction is a very short story. Every sentence reveals the story and often suggests a back story hidden behind the text. Here is a chance to have a go at writing some extremely short stories using a variety of prompts and guides and enjoying the fun and relaxed process of creating mini fiction. You'll be supported by our friendly tutor and perhaps your writing will spark a new creative hobby for you!

No experience is necessary for this free of charge course which runs over five Friday mornings in teh Parish Room at St David's Church in Exeter.

 

Creative Writing: Inspired By Nature

This is an ambitious course offering unique skills to those working in community-focused organisations. Bibliotherapy uses specially chosen books to support people with their wellbeing goals. Trainees will develop bibliotherapy skills that they will be able to use to contribute to the lives of those in their workplaces and communities.

Knit One Purl One: Beginners Knitting

Friday 8th November to Friday 29th November 2024 - 10.30am to 12.30pm, Exeter Community Centre

Join us for a fun and friendly knitting course, perfect for beginners! You’ll learn the basics of knitting, from casting on to creating simple stitches to make a cosy scarf to keep. Knitting is a mindful activity and good for mental health as we slow down and focus on each stitch. It’s also a craft using everyday number skills from adding and subtracting, to exploring patterns and geometry. Join us to knit, natter, slow down and improve our number skills along the way - and of course wear your bright new scarf home at the end of the course!

Fabulous Fairytales: From Folklore to Modern Stories

Tuesday 5th November to Tuesday 3rd December 2024 - 10.30am to 12.30pm, Exeter Community Centre

A Creative Writing course designed to examine and consider the fairytales we know – and maybe the ones we don’t. You will be invited to re-look at these stories and ask yourself whether there is another perspective to be explored.

The course will run for 5 weeks with a follow-up 2 week class where we will bring your fairy tales to life through simple experiments in illustration.

Natural Cleaning for the Home

Monday 14th October to Monday 18th November 2024 - 1.00 to 3.00pm, St David’s Parish Room

This class will introduce you to simple ingredients you can keep in your kitchen cupboards to make low-cost, eco-friendly home cleaning products. Along with an introduction to essential oils we can add to our cleaning recipes, we’ll discuss the ways smell can enhance our moods to promote positive feelings. We’ll consider mindfulness in everyday tasks and how cleaning can be a good form of stress relief and exercise. You will have the opportunity in this class to make simple products for home use.

Creative Writing: Tales from the Crypt

This course, taking place at St David’s Church, will take advantage of this atmospheric location to allow you to delve into the darkness and create your own spooky tales. Different stories and prompts will be used each week in this playful Creative Writing course.

Fabulous Fairytales Part 2: Storybook Illustrations

Wednesday 4th December to Wednesday 11th December 2024 - 10.30am to 12.30pm, Exeter Community Centre

The course is open to learners who attended our Fabulous Fairytales course and to anyone who is interested in experimenting with paper silhouettes to illustrate stories. Over two weeks we will create illustrations based on the characters, objects and settings featuring in creative writing produced as part of the course Fabulous Fairytales: From Folklore to Modern Stories. We will work with paper to explore simple and traditional techniques of marbling and silhouettes inspired by iconic illustrator Jan Pieńkowski.
