You are invited to our workshop on Wednesday afternoons for Chop & Chat with Nathan.

Chop & Chat is weekly drop-in session at our workshop, where men are invited to come and chop, dry and package wood for our Kind Kindling project, whilst also providing a safe and welcoming space for honest conversation and chats about life, mental health, recovery, family & everything in between. Our hope is that Chop & Chat will help reduce stigma around men’s mental health, and will help provide a non-judgemental space where men can talk, encourage and support one another over a cuppa, whilst they chop wood together.

Poetry & Spoken Word

Our poetry and spoken word course is a creative writing drop in group that runs every Monday at St Stephen’s Church. Whether you enjoy writing prose or poetry, each session is designed to be stand alone in its content so people can turn up and get involved on any given week! I believe that we all have a story we bring, experiences to muse on and words that we can share. This group exists to build community, grow in creativity and inspire us to live more wholehearted lives.

Different Perspectives on Mental Health

Every Thursday 19th September to 31st October 2024 - 2 to 4pm, CoLab

During this 6 week course, we will explore the meaning of mental distress from four very different viewpoints; the biological (including the medical model), psychological approaches, the societal perspective and a spiritual one. Each has something to offer, none has the whole story.

This is an introductory level course; no previous knowledge is assumed. It is suitable for those on a recovery journey, for those with a personal or professional interest in mental health, and those seeking to use their own lived experience to help others.

Design your own Tote Bag

Friday 26th July 2024 - 10.00am to 12.00pm, FABLAB Exeter Library

Let your creativity run free with our Tote Bag Design Workshop.  FabLab Devon's Digital Making Tutor, Marcus Brown,  will guide you in how to use a graphics design website combining images and text with a choice of layouts. 

Your design will then be printed onto a transfer sheet and heat-pressed onto your very own Tote Bag to take away with you. Bags are printed in full-colour on one side and are waterproof!  

Design Your Own Eco Notebook

Friday 26th July 2024 - 2.00 to 4.00pm, FABLAB Exeter Library

Here is your chance to learn some 2D vector-based design.  Marcus Brown, the Digital Making Tutor at FabLab Devon, will guide you through some 2D software to create your own design using images and text.  The design will be laser-engraved onto your own eco-notebook.  The notebooks have recycled paper and feature a bamboo front and back cover.  Your design will be engraved onto the front.

Join us on a guided journey into the world of aromatic plants, flowers and herbs. Take a moment to experience, explore and share with others the impact aroma has on our senses. Observe how it can influence our sense of wellbeing. Essential oils inspire memories, emotions and ideas. We will blend your personal responses and associations into a uniquely fragranced product based on your chosen selection for you to take home with you.  

 

Different Perspectives on Psychosis

Wednesday 17th July 2024 - 2.00 to 4.00pm, CoLab

Are you having delusions or are you seeing and hearing what others miss? Is normality a form of insanity? Different Perspectives on Psychosis – each viewpoint has something to offer, no one has the whole story. The perspectives we will explore include the Biological, Psychological, Social and Spiritual. The focus is educational and political rather than therapeutic. 

Dr Kevin Walker would like to find out how, in attempting to live a mentally healthy life in an insane world, we can change the way we relate to each other and the world around us.

Creative Letterpress Printmaking

Wednesday 10th and 17th July 2024 - 11.00am to 4.00pm, Positive Lights

Using the ‘Pelican Printing Press’ and beautiful antique wooden letterpress create a range of exciting text based outcomes from posters to graphic prints producing a series of unique, personal artworks, bringing your ideas and imagination to life. No previous experience necessary, this workshop is open to all abilities and will be delivered in our street level accessible space.

Women's Group

CoLab Women offers specialist support to women who are homeless or living in temporary accommodation.   We offer bespoke domestic abuse and sexual violence and trauma support to women, and also a range of creative activities and opportunities to connect with others. We are currently working towards having a women’s centre for Exeter by 2025. CoLab are hosting a men-only space with access to health checks, activities, support with mental health and recovery issues and signposting to learning and wellbeing opportunities.

Italic Calligraphy for Improvers

Tuesday 25th June 2024 - 10.00am to 1.00pm, CoLab

A workshop for those who attended the first workshop or who have previous calligraphy experience. Come and improve your calligraphy in this step by step class.

We will practice the letterforms again and concentrate on getting the right angle for the letters. Spacing, letter heights and thick’s and thins will be studied.

Roman capitals will be included in this workshop. Everyone will be encouraged to write out a ‘poem’ , gift tags, cards, mottos etc.

Journalling for Wellbeing

Join Matt Young, The Journaling Guy, for a half-day class on “Learning How To Journal”. During the session Matt will give you the techniques that will help you understand why you think the way you do, enable you to deal with those difficult emotions and teach you how to set goals, achieve more and find your way in life. Journaling helps you feel better both physically as well as mentally, and enables you to process emotions differently, rather than having them spinning around inside your mind.

Introduction to Italic Calligraphy ‘ The Art of Writing’

During the Renaissance in Italy a cursive variant of Carolingian hand developed. This grew out of a need to write at a faster pace than before, this became known as the Italic writing hand. Come and learn how to do Italic writing for cards, poems or just for pleasure.

Have you ever wanted to write a short story or poem, but don’t know where to start? Maybe you have an idea that you can’t seem to put down on paper? Learn to Draw from Nature

ANYONE CAN DRAW a workshop for complete beginners. By studying natural objects come and learn some new skills and gain confidence in your drawing.

Using pencils and graphite we will practice drawing natural objects such as leaves, twigs, buds etc These natural objects will be used for inspiration and study throughout the morning.

 

Learn to Draw Flowers from Nature

Friday 17th May 2024 - 10.00am to 1.00pm, CoLab

Anyone can Draw. Drawing spring flowers: daffodils, tulips etc.

Using pencils graphite and some colour practice drawing spring flowers. By studying different angles we can give form to these lovely spring flowers. Learn how to add shading by stippling, cross hatching and light and heavy pressure.

We will practice one minute sketches to gain confidence, drawing large and small studies in a square to understand placement.

Introduction to Forest Bathing

In Japan forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku) has been practised and studied for decades. Evidence shows that time spent forest bathing is good for your overall wellbeing and reduces stress.

Forest bathing immerses and focuses your senses - allowing the focus on your senses to bring you into the current moment and engage with the healing power of nature. The experience encourages a feeling of reciprocity when you feel part of being connected with other living things.

Women of Wonder - Theatre and Creative Writing Taster Session

Greek myths are epic tales of Gods and mortals, heroes and monsters. But within these stories, women are often side-lined, manipulated or blamed for (literally) all the evil in the world. It’s time to change the perspective...

Join award-winning Scratchworks Theatre Company for 2 theatre workshops, exploring women in Greek Mythology through creative writing, movement and music. Scratchworks are a female-led Exeter based theatre company. You don’t need previous theatre experience, just an interest in telling stories and creative expression.

Scrapstore Scavenger Hunt

Monday 5th August 2024 - 10.00am to 4.00pm, at Belmont Park & CoLab

With the cost of living crisis growing deeper each year, CoLab have teamed up with Exeter Scrapstore & Community Artist Jola Pawlikowska on an interesting project that asks participants to think outside the box, and get creative with what they find.

We first will meet in Belmont Park and then walk through the park to the Scrapstore. Each participant will be given a basket to fill from the unusual contents of the scrapstore. The group will then move to CoLab and either individually or in groups create a piece of art, sculpture, or performance art, using the theme of “Cost of Living” using ONLY the pieces they have collected. Are you up for the challenge?!

 

Nature Embroidery Workshop

Do you enjoy creative projects? Or want to learn embroidery skills? Maybe you've never thread a needle. Our Nature embroidery workshop could be perfect for you! All adults are welcome to work on individual and/or group projects to go at your own pace and in your own direction.

We all bring along ideas to share and inspire in a safe and friendly space. Each week you can choose to continue with your existing project or start a new one. We share our skills and experience with each other to inspire and ignite new ideas and techniques. The theme is ‘Springtime’ colours, leaves and flowers. All materials are provided however, feel free to bring your own if you'd like, e.g.: needlework and fabric.

Mandala Making With Nature

Mandala translates from the ancient Sanskrit language as ‘circle’. We can see mandala shapes in nature and human made in buildings, temples, and art. Mandala’s also symbolise the interconnectedness of all things. In our three hour workshop we will use things from nature (leaves, twigs, berries) to create our own unique mandalas. This is a simple way to notice and learn about shapes in nature and is a creative way to connect with nature.

Fantastic Places: Pottery Fridge Magnets

FREE* 6-week course for adults aged 19+. Join us for this relaxing, mindful course to craft your very own set of fridge magnets. You will create images of your favourite places; places you would love to visit or places you can imagine or invent. Using terracotta clay and colourful slips ( coloured liquid clay) your work will be fired and glazed as earthenware and a magnet attached to the back.

Ideal for beginners or returners - no experience needed. All materials provided. Please bring an apron or wear clothes that you don't mind getting a little grubby!

Art Time! Colour, Collage and Mood

This relaxed and friendly course is a chance to be playful and experimental, to take some time out and try your hand at creative activities using colour as a starting point. Each week we'll try a different colour-based activity with the opportunity to follow set tasks as well as exploring your own ideas.

Does red make you feel energetic or agitated? Blue calm or sad? We all have ways we respond to colour - things we will or won't wear, or how we like a room to look and feel. We will explore colour through a range of activities including collage and collection; working with words; and painting and picture making.

Lots of people want or love to draw but sometimes don't have the confidence or skills. It could be that you already draw and maybe don't take the time or space for it. This course is for you. Using a range of materials, playful approaches, experimentation and structured tasks you will develop ways of looking, seeing and drawing.

The course takes place in a light-filled art room and you will be in a small group working with a friendly and supportive tutor. All welcome, from complete beginners onwards, no experience necessary. Take time out to do some art and explore, learn or improve your skills.

Writing Flash Fiction: Creative Writing Course

Flash Fiction is a very short story. Every sentence reveals the story and often suggests a back story hidden behind the text. Here is a chance to have a go at writing some extremely short stories using a variety of prompts and guides and enjoying the fun and relaxed process of creating mini fiction. You'll be supported by our friendly tutor and perhaps your writing will spark a new creative hobby for you!

No experience is necessary for this free of charge course which runs over five Friday mornings in teh Parish Room at St David's Church in Exeter.

 

Creative Writing: Inspired By Nature

Introduction to Bibliotherapy Skills

This is an ambitious course offering unique skills to those working in community-focused organisations. Bibliotherapy uses specially chosen books to support people with their wellbeing goals. Trainees will develop bibliotherapy skills that they will be able to use to contribute to the lives of those in their workplaces and communities.

In this hands-on workshop experience led by Exeter Science Centre, you'll take part in activities to learn about the science of satellites, understand how they help local scientists to monitor Planet Earth from space, and find out ways to get involved with tackling global issues. There's no science knowledge required to take part, it's open to everyone!

Learning about making artefacts using natural materials, this would include a variety of activities including clay work, natural dyeing, sewing, weaving etc. Many of these will be sold to help maintain the activities.

Being involved in growing vegetables, herbs, soft fruit and other plants as well as maintaining the rest of the garden. Also an opportunity to cook lunch for everyone using the produce we have grown and potting up plants to sell on a stall at the farm gate
